| Homemade Chicken Coop Tractor |
I LOVE fresh eggs. So getting chickens for backyard egg layers was an easy decision. The hard part, what to 'keep' them in. I live in a town where backyard hens are permitted, but I also have neighbors and a rather small backyard. I can't just allow them to 'free range' over to the neighbor's at any time. Plus, I have a garden I'd like to put the chickens in to till and fertilize the soil at times. The solution? A chicken tractor!
Chicken tractors are portable coops that allow birds access to the ground as well as an enclosed area for nesting boxes and a roosting perch for sleeping. I looked for hours and hours at all the different chicken coop tractors, most for sale, on line. After seeing the prices for store bought coops, we decided to build our own. We already had the wood, recycled from an old fence that was no longer standing. So we got to work building our own homemade chicken coop tractor.
We hit a local recycled building materials yard and were able to trade some items we had laying around for paint and hinges for our homemade coop. We purchased some chicken wire from a nearby hardware store, it was fairly cheap, and a small roll was more than enough for us.
The results? A happy home for our feathery friends that didn't break the bank!
